You enter the country with a F (or L) visa, but once your registration is done you will be required to go to the police to change it to X (student) visa. X visa cannot be obtained overseas directly, that's why you will have to come first on another visa, before getting the X visa in the city you are going to live.

Maybe it's because of the reason you presented your embassy with? I left my country with an X visa, because I was coming here to study.

OK, things might have changed then, the first time I came to China as student was in 1998! And at that time you needed to come to China on a one-month visa, do all your medical check-up, pay your fees (for self-supporting students) before being granted the final X visa.

In my case I did the medical check up thing back home, given a temporary X visa, did the medical here again and then given a one year X visa for my first year.  They then changed that last year (2006) to a residence permit [purpose of study].  So that's probably what they'll do for Collinstexas, if he's going to study medicine which will take years he'll be given a residence permit, valid until he finish his studies.

I'm not sure how to "brief" you any further on this...but basically, I got my student residence permit on 2005 and it ends on July '09 after the studies.

Before it was issued, I went to the students office at my school and told them I wanted to extend the student's X visa I had.  The teacher said that it's a new thing in China (year 2005), that we won't be issued this small little green book anymore; everything will be in the passport.  So I paid about a thousand RMB to get it processed by the school.  It came back about a week later with that rectangular visa sticker...here's what it looks like:

It depends on how much you want to pay.  And obviously if you only have a year left you won't be allowed to extend the visa for 4 more years. ;D ::)
