collinstexas,

Usually you need to take an exam before being admitted by a university for a degree program (4 years for a bachelor degree, about 2 years for a Master degree). The exam for international students are normally a lot easier than the Nationwide University Entrance Exams for Chinese high school graduates. You might want to contact the office for international students at the university for the requirements in detail.

In Jiangsu, Nanjing University is the best, one of the top universities in China.

Universities in China started charging tuitions in the 90's, but the fees are still considered low compared to that in the U.S. Also, the tuition differences between top universities and less competitive universities in China are not that much. Therefore, get into the best if you can.

Good luck.

collinstexas,

I don't know the details, but I will tell you what I know.

If you apply from an African country, you might want to find out the scholarship program provided by Chinese government that will cover both your tuition and living expenses. The process might vary in different countries, but I guess pat_togo and some other people on this forum will be able to give you an idea how the exams will be like. If you are selected, you will be sent to a language school in China to study Chinese for 6 months or one year before you apply to a school you would like to go.

If you apply in the U.S. you might want to get information of exchange programs in a U.S. university where scholarships are usually available. Some folks on this forum are in the programs and might provide you helpful information.

If you apply in China, which is relatively new, you might want to ask the offices for international students and scholars in the universities. Hopefully some folks on this form can tell you something about it since left China for quite a while and really don't know much about it.   Just wish you the best of luck.

Thanx jatoo,l ur infos are quite helpfull. l think first of all there is no need to think of the scholarship they might offer, its just about the best and the right school. l think china should have been a hotbed for international students but l guess the language barrier is what thats been keeping most of intenational students from coming to china. The school fees is relatively lower than other countries. US? UK? Canada?

Thanx jatoo

School fees are lower...and so is the quality of education.  I wouldn't pay to study in China, be it at the best university.  I've lost respect for the universities here.  The best thing to study in China would be the Chinese language.

Although there might be some logic or reasoning in your opinion to accept, but I don't totally agree when you say the system of education is outright rubbish. There are definitely barriers to efficient comprehension specifically due to the LANGUAGE BARIER. I also agree that I'll never pay my own fees to study a specialized course in China except to study the language.

Condemnation is a healthy practice, but should be done objectively.

Cheers

I disagree. I got my B.S. and M.S. in science and engineering field in China before going to a graduate school in the U.S. on a scholarship. I knew how much I was ahead of not only other students there but some professors in my fields, which was not unusual for many Chinese graduate students in the U.S.

The education system in China might not be perfect, but it does have a good reputation in the world. It has been playing a key role for the economic success of China.

Here is the rankings of universities in the world published by the Times (Two universities in China, Peking University and Tsinghua University were on the top):
Note: Beijing University = Peking University

http://newshub.nus.edu.sg/headlines/0610/ranking_07oct06.htm

NUS accorded World's Top 20 universities ranking

The National University of Singapore (NUS) has been ranked amongst the World's Top 20 and Top 3 universities in Asia in the QS World University Rankings 2006 conducted by the Times Higher Education Supplement (THES). In this annual ranking of the top 200 universities worldwide, NUS shared 2nd place in Asia and 19th spot overall with University of Tokyo.

Harvard University topped the poll in which only three Asian universities – Peking University, University of Tokyo and NUS – made it to the top 20.

The list of Top 20 universities is given in the table below:

World's Top 20 Universities
1    Harvard University                                   11    University of Chicago
2    University of Cambridge                            12    Columbia University
3    University of Oxford                                 13    Duke University

10     Princeton University                                19    University of Tokyo

The criteria used for this year's rankings include research quality (peer review by 3,703 academics who were asked to identify up to 30 universities best for research within their own field of expertise, and citations per faculty); teaching quality; graduate employability (recruiter review by 736 employers world-wide); and international outlook (international-to-total faculty and international students-to-total students ratios).

Upon receiving the news, NUS President Professor Shih Choon Fong said, "We are encouraged and heartened to be ranked once again among the world's leading universities and one of Asia's top three. Our position within the top 20 this year is a recognition of NUS' global standing by the international community. In our continuing pursuit of excellence in education and research, NUS can contribute to Singapore's rising reputation and visibility in the global higher education landscape."

Rankings by Disciplines

NUS continues to be regarded highly in the major disciplines. It is among the world’s top 10 for Technology and Biomedicine, ranking 8th and 9th respectively. Amongst universities in Asia, NUS emerged second for Biomedicine and within the top three for Technology. The University made a significant leap in Science, jumping 12 spots from 34th last year to 22nd this year. LOL @ Jatoo...

I did NOT say I don't respect Singapore's NUS.  I really do respect the education system in Singapore (esp. because it follows mostly the British education system Tongue).

I also never said that I don't respect universities in Asia, why do you keep emphasizing on Tokyo & Singapore? They are both independent countries; they are not part of China! Tongue

I do respect the fact that there are many talented & capable students in China.  Out of the billions, it's no surprise at all.  But there you go, you've proven it yourself - the facts show that most universities topping the list are American & British universities.  China coming in anywhere after top 5 is already embarrassing, esp. for such a large, relatively well-established country; a country with universities scattered all over the place.

If any of you watched the CCTV CUP English contest just a little over a week ago, you might remember this Chinese participant who argued that China should work on the quantity instead of quality of education...and he didn't even back up his argument well enough (so ironically China should perhaps start considering working on the quality of education).

Jatoo, congrats on the scholarship...but here's a thought: if China's universities were really THAT respectable and if you were really in a league of your own when you got to the US, why would they send you to a non-Chinese university to pursue "further" education?

I emphasized neither Singapore nor Japan, but simply provided objective and complete information.

Unlike the West, China is a developing nation. Universities in China have far less financial support than those in the West.  The rankings just indicated the higher education in China was NOT lower in quality as you said.

I did not watch the contest, but I don't see anything wrong with working on the quality instead of the quantity.

Nobody sent me to the U.S. I made a choice for my life to experience a different world.
