Nearly 100,000 members of the Communist Party were punished for corruption in 2006, AP reported. The government announced that 97,260 members of the Communist Party had been punished, and that more than 80% of them "took bribes and violated the party's financial and economic rules." President Hu Jintao said rapid progress is needed to investigate corruption or the legitimacy of the party would be eroded. Corruption cases include China's former top statistician, Qiu Xiaohua, who was accused of taking bribes and having more than one wife. The other high-profile case was last year's arrest of Shanghai's former Communist Party chief, Chen Liangyu, who was detained in a pension fund scandal that involved more than a dozen officials and business executives.

It is not exaggerating to say corruptions in China are rampant. It rooted in the system that the government has been struggling to balance between holding the power and being monitored for healthy development and social justice. China has made great progress in a short period of time, but still far from perfect.

Even the head of Shanghai was arrested. Now we have the internet, people will report cases or put allegations of corruption or abuse of power on the bbs forums which will finally bring those things to the attention of the central government and cause an investigation on the relevant officals. If the central government does not take action, that kind of posts on BBS forums will never sink as people will keep on hitting the post or to post new post on the matter and keep them on the top. That is a totally new game.  ;D
