On average how much does it take to live in Shanghai per month? What is a good area to stay in that is not too expensive. How much should I expect to spend on food monthly? In order to live well, what should I be earning there?

Highly depends on what you consider "average". ;)

Many of my [extremely] low-budget friends tell me that 500 yuan ($65) is all they spend on food monthly, they only eat at home.  In my opinion, have about 1'500 yuan for food per month...that should be enough.

You can also get a nice-enough apartment for around 1'500 - 1'800 yuan (incl. electric & water).

So if you earn about 3000-4000 yuan or more per month, you should be ok.

You can easily make it on CNY2000/month.  That will cover rent, food, the occasional bus ride, pre-paid cellphone card, etc.

You can also live the lifestyle where you spend CNY4000/month on food alone.

You need to clarify your definition of living well.  Will you want a car?  Electric bike?  High-speed internet access?  Do you mind having your bathroom 3 steps away from your kitchen?  Have a problem with living on the 5th floor of a building with no elevator?  Comfortable shopping for food at the wet market, or are you always going to buy your knosh from an expat supermarket?  Want a flat with an actual oven?  Willing to take a bus or do you prefer the privacy and comfort of a taxi?
