He who lives on hope will die fasting

« on: November 24, 2006, 01:04:12 PM »

I was fortunate to have travelled to Beijing in the early week of November,  a perfect coincidence with the week of the Afro-Sino Summit held in that Ancient and Romantic city. I also happened to have monitored Dialogue's edition that hosted Dr. John Kufur, the president of Ghana. What I observed from these happenings is that a window of opportunity has been opened to either glorify or to ridicule Africa and Africans. In Beijing I observed with chargrin the beautiful decorations and slogans praising the cooperation between Africa and China. African cultural troupes were seen in famous places giving heart-warming performances. African leaders were assigned luxurious escorts and accommodations to give them a semblance of a "feel at home" aura. I saw Yan Rui quiz Dr. Kufur on CCTV 9. One remark the host made was that Africa is considered a "scar on the conscience of the human race", so it was "our government's goal to turn this notion around".

My fellow compatriots, the question at hand is how long will Africa continue to languish as a faceless continent while the most blind of the blinds mocks and makes a caricarture of that great continent? Will our leaders seize this opportunity to exploit the benefits that belie this friendship? or will it be business as usual?

I look forward to your suggestions.

I'm a Liberian reading my masters in Finance at SHUFE.

Who is the host who uttered those words?Let me guess. The Hong kong fellow with the large lips ::) ::).Sounds so much like him.Seriously,I hate topics like this. >:( >:(I am already tired of cctv 9 so much so that i don't watch news when some particular people are on.They are worst than all the other channels in china.Just cos they have foreign reporters and some toms, dicks and harrys,as well as some charlattan journalists, doesn't make them better than anybody. >:(
As for Africa, the only way out is for those yam heads we have in the name of presidents, to leave for better people to take their place.Only then will Africa become what it is supposed to be;the richest continent in the world.By they way,who chose that ugly name "Africa"
First things first, let change it to something positive cos that name has a sort of badluck >:( >:( ;D ;D

My guess is Yang Rui, the most awful host of all at the CCTV9. He often makes ridiculous propaganda like statements before asking some foolish questions.  The sad thing is many bright and informed Chinese journalists are not considered trustworthy in the Chinese media.

As long as Africa and Africans continue to sell out for cheap, steal, continue the bullshitting everybody and allow the outside world to paint such a bad picture of the place it will never change. Ask yourselves, how will it benefit the Chinese by inviting the African nations here to a sit down and discuss better relations? China is one of the worlds fastest growing economys, furthering relations with the Aricans leaders can only help as far as I am concern, but it is up to the Africans leaders to embrace the opportunity and do what is best for Africans, but we all know that is not going to be the case, if we look at the past history of Africa and its leaders, most of whatever money that will come from this relationship will probably end up in a Swiss bank account.
I do understand that Africa has a lot to offer and not all african's are crooks, but how come we as outsiders don't see that? who controls the media in some of these countries? it appears that no one cares what and how the countries there are portrayed.

And who give a sh.t about some dumb ass cctv 9 reporter who english skills are worst then my little two year old sister?

Hundreds of millions of Africans speak limited or no English.  Using your logic we should not give a shit about them because they are not as fluent as your two year old sister.

Attack the comnment made by the reporter.  Dismissing the comments of the reporter because she does not speak English is as foolhardy as dismissing her comments because of the color of her skin.  Actually, even more foolhardy; with some work she can speak fluent English and still say Africa is a scar on the conscience of the human race.  What would your retort be then?

Africa does have an awful lot to offer.  A lot of what a rapidly growing economy like China needs. Natural resources and markets where they can export finished goods.

Step 1) Import raw material from impoverished nations
Step 2) Give your citizens jobs turning the raw material into finished goods
Step 3) Sell the finished goods back to the developing/ developed world
Step 4) Profit!

China has the best interests of Africans in mind, just like the USA has the best interests of the Iraqis in mind.

Please read some history.  USA is in IRAQ because of oil and nothing else.  The US only cares about countries that it can benefit from.  Africa has been raped of it's natural resources and labor for hundreds of years.  Why would China be any different?  I don't know the actual thoughts and feelings behind China and Africa expanding their relationship.  But I do know what they tell us, is not always true.

@Danielle
I suppose the guy/girl was actually being satiricI hope cos that was the first impression i got when i read that :-\

As for replying the fellow who talked abt Africa being a scar on the face of the world, they should remember that CAMEROON..........yes CAMEROON,under the former president Ahmadou Ahidjo,in the 70s gave  FINANCIAL AID  in billions of CFA to China to assist her, when China was the scar on the face of the planet. That is what I will tell him/her.
To conclude,a proverb from Cameroon.
"A child who doesn't want his mother to sleep because he is crying should remember that he too will not sleep."  ;D ;D

what are you talking about? you are completely lost!!! all I was saying is that this subject is about more important things then some non english speaking reporter on cctv, and I stand by my statement ,It has nothing to do with race, and for him to make a statement like that tells me he has very limited reporting skills, and I for one don't give a s..t about him or Cctv 9.

I agree that Africa does have alot to offer, but the bottom line is what are they doing with what they have to offer?
Africa for the most part need China, China don't need Africa for a damn thing, maybe China would like to get something from Africa, but China has enough money to buy it I am sure, and what will happen to that money that China will spend in Africa?
Hmmm!

This is not about the USA and Iraq, we all know the deal about that.

The English fluency of the reporter is as germane to your comment as is his skin color.  I'd object just as much if you has said "Who cares what some light-skinned reporter said on CCTV".
(Being racist does not prevent a person from being a good reporter.)

To clarify; the above statment is an example of sarcasm.  Eveybody knows that China really wants what's best for Africa!

(Yes, that was me being sarcastic again).
