Dear Brother,

I already spend 6 years of my life in this country and still i am asking myself this question. It is really disgusting to see how our brother and government worship chinese back home while we are facing and extreme racism in this country. I don't think i am the only one having this problem because i also meet other african who spend more time that me and they are still complaining about chinese attitude towards black in general and african in particular. frienship with chinese people is only based on interest. what ever a chinese let said to you, how much he like you, or he like african, it's not true. as soon as he get what he want from you every thing is finish. and beside, he came to you for something that other can not not do. of course chinese first choice is for wite people, and i am always happy when this ite people that they consider as god fuck them.

what you said is not totally right. Some of my best friends are black. We've been helping each other for many years. However, I find it hard to make friends with black guys, cause many of them only want female friends.

To be frank, I don't think China is the right place for black people. However, you can learn to enjoy it if you try to look at the bright side. Sometimes your attitude is more important than how people think of you. Since you are in China, I hope you can at least try to apprieciate your life here. Chinese people may not be a big fan of black people, but they are not evil.

Money in the pocket is the main reason. The general impression of white people from the west is that they are rich and Chinese people wll generally admire rich people.  If you can read Chinese, you will find some very intersting observation about Africans in the bbs forums discussing about doing business with Africans, but in those forums you seldem find any racist attitude. Most of the Chinese businessmen's concern is how to distinguish a "real" businessman from Africa and the rogues/scrums. From reading those discussions, I have the feeling that there are quite a number of rogues/scrums out there, they have ruined the reputation of Afrians generally and that have affected other honest Africans.

Is there any reason why chinese fellas are not big fans of black fellas?I am tempted to think its the colour of the skin nothing else.

First I want to say no one will just automatically turn into a fan of a different race . There has to be some reason. One major reason is economic one. Now that white people grasp the most fortune in the world, both Chinese and blacks tend to embrace white people. In reverse, are black people a big fan of Chinese? I don't think so, aside from a few of Africans who think China is a richer country.  Since both of us are busy climbing the social ladder, we both became believers of white supremacy, which is very natural.

Most of Chinese know nothing about Africans. Ignorance creates distance. Unfortunately, some chinese, if they do want to get to know black people, usually get a distorted description. Most of the media, including TV, magazine, movie and etc., put some stereotypes on black people. Some are usually associated with poverty, crimes, drugs, diseases and other social problems. These misconceptions really influenced many Chinese people's view, since this is the only source they can get. So if Chinese don't like blacks, i think they are not the only one to blame.

To change these stereotype, i think blacks in China have more responsibilty, cause everything you did here is not just about yourselves: to many chinese, what you do here represents black people in whole. A black friend of mine has a very straightforward character, which means if he gets angry, he will shout and curse. because i know him very well, I was never scared and i don't make a big fuss about it. But I really hate it everytime he acted that way in front of other Chinese in public. You know one stereotype here about black people is they have anger control problem. So every time he screamed in a restaurant, (he often has trouble with the messed-up menu in China and he is very picky about food) i was very angry at him. I said "I don't care how you scream in front me. if you did that in public, you just help build on the wrong stereotype of black people. If you do that again, don't be my friend! cause you just helped these people who hate blacks!" After that he has been trying to control himself, though it still seems difficult.

I don’t think we really have to blame Chinese for these reasons of not liking blacks or whatever you want to call it; I guess media’s all over the world points out the pits area of Africa and Africans and that is the main reason why Chinese people look down upon BLACK AFRICANS. I have been living in this country for the past five years and yes, I can’t deny that Chinese people has never discriminate against me before,,,, but ;;;; heyyyyy I just don’t care and I don’t give a damn  what they think about my color, I speaks Chinese and I understood every bad comments they make about blacks , but, we can’t sleep on this and I just think it’s all depends on how we take it and hoe we also behave ourselves.

does it occur to you that many chinese send very poor signals (pointing, calling names etc)to blacks which actually  makes them wanna scream?Worse still some of them i came across boldly said "chinese are like that" sort of culture thing and were even trying to defend this "hideous"attitudes.I admit blacks are just soo crazy but then, have u ever wondered why?Maybe because when they are honest,no chinese would believe.A clear example is in the teaching field.Recently,i got a job offer and after a phone interview, the lady said i had a clear and nice accent.Of course i was happy but then, she finally came up with the "we want a native-speaker"thing"She knew i was from Cameroon.I told her cos  i wanted no heat. Now when a black is told right in the face that they need a native-speaker (white),what does that imply?English is not the problem cos my english is standard (no boasting). Was i wrong to be honest enough to tell her my realllllll country?HELL NO!!!.Many Africans are confronted with this problem daily and the only way to survive,i am afraid is by being dishonest in many cases. Some schools are open and don't really care but in politics we say "majority wins the vote" and in China, the majority of schools want "native speakers"even if they know nothing.
This attitude has spread to all other levels and dimensions, not only in education. All of us,both blacks and chinese have a share of the blame but remember that the way you treat someone in your home determines the person's actions in latter days. The way Afrcans are thought to be in China makes many of them so frustrated they end up going the wrong way.Money speaks and if  u can't get it cos u are honest, then try the opposite.Even some chinese i have met, acquire money dishonestly and I mean that.
GET RICH OR DIE TRYIN'
That,i'm afraid,is the rule in China for blacks. ::) ::)

Even Chinese born and raised in USA/Canada have difficulty in finding teaching post because they are not regarded as native speakers. That also applied to Indians, etc. It happens all over Asia. For African women, if you visit Chinese BBS forums, you will find Chinese who has visited Africa regard  Ethiopian women are the most beauty. ;D

China has closed its doors for more than 1000 years, after Tang Dynasty, no foreigners were seen. (In Tang Dynasty, many foreigners mainly people from Middle East, Africa lived in Xian). Until last century foreigners came again as invaders with their warships. You can imagine what is the attitude of an ordinary Chinese towards foreigners. In some smaller places, you may just be the first one they have ever seen in their whole life, you cannot stop people from having curiousity on you. That also happened to Chinese who go to African villages, it is just the way of life. About 20 years ago when China opened its door again, there was a report that in Lanzhou the first foreigners went there were surrounded by 100,000 locals, count the number.

Well, you are right about this….. but many Chinese also have this type of problem.

Believe me. When i first saw him act that way in New York, I was really scared and thought he gonna hurt somebody, cause i never met any chinese who was so angry just because i ordered the wrong food for him. But then i realized that's just his way, and he never gonna do anything crazy. But i don't mean it has to be a "black thing", because most blacks i met have a very gentle personality.

By the way, he is American. I know there may be some differences between Africans and Afro-Americans, cause some US citizens have that kind of big American ego. But most Chinese just see them as one group.

Black girls find it hard to make friends with Chinese men. This is so funny.I was taught in school that opposite charges attract each other and like charges repel each other. In china, its not the case when it comes to black girls and chinese men. What a world.

It doesn't just happen in China. In USA, black women are experiencing serious dating crisis also. Many Afro-American guys reach out for another race and  black girls in US have trouble finding IBM (Ideal Black Men), or even white or Asian men. That's why black girls hate the movie Hitch, because Will Smith kissed a white girl in that movie. If you look at the American marital statistics in recent 30 years, you will know about it.

By the way,  I don't think it is right to lie just because it is hard to get a job. Some schools in China really care about a standard American or British accent, but others don't.  I think I speak perfect American English, but only Americans can tell I don't. it is better to tell the truth than being caught halfway and expelled as a liar. Their prejudice (if you think it is) doesn't justify your dishonesty. Also a native speaker doesn't necessarily mean white. My friend is black American teaching here. Believe me, these Chinese people who got money illegally will get what they deserve one day.

It is just my personal advice and this is the philosophy i believe. But life ain't easy...So I understand your tough situation.
