Believe me or not. Four years ago, chinese people don't know what hip-hop is. When I was playing some rap music, they were like "you call this music???" Cause most chinese people only like slow soppy love songs. Fast dance club music is not appealing to them. But at that time, they knew something about rock'n'roll. They think it is coolest music but they still have trouble appreciating it. Yes everyone knows the song "My heart will go on". If you asked them what Hip-Hop is like, they would think it was something like Micheal Jackson stuff. But all of sudden, there is Hip-Hop party everywhere in Shanghai. But I really doubt they know how to enjoy it. Most people probably just think it is cool and fashionable to go to the party.

Also in their way of accepting Hip-Hop, they had a habit of accepting a white or asian image first. Korean music is the kind of "Hip-Hop" they like at first.  Now, most chinese people probably only know one rapper, Eminem, even though there are plenty of black rappers better than him. Black Eyed Peas is so popular in China now that they just had a concert in Shanghai. This is because it has a pretty white girl in it. If you ask any Chinese if they know about Outkast, most of them would say no.

The first time I came to China was four years ago too. As far as appreciation of rap was concerned, I was a one man island, and there were few other Black Americans in the city (Beijing). When I came back the second time in '04, hip-hop had grown due to its marketing potential and its gotten bigger for the same reason. Original hip-hop was created to express the thoughts of those who might have questioned the way things were and wanted positive progress. Today's mainstream hip-hop is basically made not to make people think, but to sell records. So, with that said, I can completely understand where you're coming from. Where are you from by the way?

That's not 100% accurate. Most Chinese love techno/trance/house, which in fact is fast dance club music. You should know, because according to your past posts, you say that you're Chinese yourself. I've DJed before and when I play hip-hop, a lot of Chinese have asked me to play faster music. What they want to hear in a hip-hop club is their usual techno/trance/house, which has a tempo twice as fast as that of hip-hop. So, with that said, when it comes to the club, most Chinese want "fast dance club music". I understand why you contradict yourself in your speech. After all, it is hard trying to come off as something you're not. Imitation is indeed the highest form of flattery, yet.....its better to be yourself. You'll be appreciated either way.

You said "when it comes to the club, most Chinese want fast dance club music". But how much percent of Chinese people go to club? You call that majority?? Also I was talking about the change of music taste in recent years. You just said "As far as appreciation of rap was concerned, I was a one man island, and there were few other Black Americans in the city". You just proved my point. And what do you mean by saying "it is hard trying to come off as something you're not."?? I am not pretending i am black or something.

But maybe I know you, cause i know at least four DJs who are AfroAmericans in Shanghai. You are not the DJ from Detroit, aren't you? So don't turn an interesting topic into a fight. It is just some info I'd like to share. No big deal. Take it easy.

For those who can read Chinese, www.hiphop8.com is probably the best Chinese hip-hop site. It features some good forums with people with a relatively in depth knowledge of hip-hop. It's also funny in one thread how they had a poll of whether their parents accepted their love of hip-hop and some said they hid it from their parents  ;D

I went to the grocery store in Wenzhou last month and they were playing "Don't Want no Short Dick Man" followed by "My neck. My Back."   I was almost floored.  No one in the store understood it or didn't complain.

One time a Japanese cat in Shanghai told me that he loved the Bloods after I told him I'm from LA.  That's not love of hip-hop...it's ignorance.

What's ur point here dude? Starting a fight or what?  And yeah, what he wrote was true about Chinese people....They prefer fast musics (techno and house to be precise),though the youths now like hiphop, but u find out that when Techno is played they still enjoy it more..No kidding....this ain't fantasy, it's reality....So believe it or yes Cassell..

I am very sure not so many party animals here. Or China will become a big African tribe full of people shaking too.

You're talking about the Africans in here generalizing people and you have the audacity to say what you've just said?

Sure there are tons of Chinese party animals in China.  In fact, just the other week when I went clubbing with a few Chinese classmates I had to be the first to say "ok, I'm going home now." Also, the place was packed with Chinese party animals - doing things out in public that Google would omit if I enabled safe search.

Just for the record I'm from an African country - and we don't have tribes, let alone ethnic minorities.  So if you think African tribes are somewhat primitive, I'm sure you'll understand what others think about China's ethnic minorities.

We're all in here defending our own country.

Gimme a break, I can see only two options here: one is you are refusing to acknowledge the realities on purpose, the other is you have completely lost notion on the realities in China. Believe me this can happen, I have some foreign friends back home including Chinese and they know more about some aspects of Togo than I do!
BTW, what was that "African Tribe full of people shaking" analogy? Speak ur mind clearly.
