L.I.F.E : Living In Fear of Extinction

« on: May 16, 2006, 02:56:24 AM »

For a while now a lot of the postings  have been revolving around people's negative experiences in China. This is in spite of the overwhelming good experiences that a lot of laowai experience on a daily basis.

I live in Shanghai, the city to be in right now, it doesn't matter where you are from, coz history is being made here, and um proud to be experiencing it. Shanghai is an incredible city with lots to do, the nite life is vibrant and choices are plenty. Food is cheap, the beer is cheap (if drank at home of course, hehe). Getting around is no problem as bus , subway, and metro announcements are in both English and Chinese.

Tell us about ur experiences (positive ones please).

Zai jian!!

P.S And you get to see parts of Shanghai in Mission Impossible 3. ;D

For sure there's been enough negative talk about China, and yet it's not such a bad place to be.
Shanghai is amazing. I still can't get over how beautiful the Pearl Tower is.I've been here for a relatively short time but I feel that Shanghai is a safe place to be. I can't think of any other place I've been to that is this safe at night.I'd never dream of going out at night on my own or in the company of female friends only back home. But in Shanghai, you can be anywhere really at 2am and no one bothers you.I know for sure that in some places, even in broad daylight,it's not safe to carry your mobile phone with you. I'm yet to hear of anyone who had their phone stolen or taken from them here.Although it is a city that 'never seems to sleep',there seem to be few crime related incidents.

Entrepreuneurship and "workaholism". These are the two main things I really like in the Chinese people. Of course there are entrepreneurs in Africa and not every Chinese has his own business. But it gets to a whole new level here in China. Personally, by coming to China I learnt that you don't need to secure a position behind a desk to make it in life, just put your sleeves up and start thinking, and you will get your life going.

Patrick..I believe EVERY Chinese wants to be a boss of his own, what they lack of are the capital and chance. We have a saying in China is that you will not become rich if you are employed, unless you are self-employed. My Father-in-law has retired very long time ago, he was a factory manager of a very large state owned factory and by profession he was a chemical engineer. He now lives in Shanghai and has a good life with his son and grand son. We all think he should take a rest and enjoy his life. However, we cannot stop him from dreaming of starting his new business, and he keeps on working on that. We now regard that as his serious hobby and we now talk about his business plans just for fun to keep him happy. ;D

Communication and mutual understanding is always a two way traffic, your attitude towards others will always determine how other people treat you.

I bet when you are in other one's place, you have to understand the others first and try to fit in, not the other way round. Chinese in Africa have to learn the African way as well. If you live in another culture and know nothing about it, you will have a lot of problem. Cultural difference will cause a lot of misunderstanding.
