At the end of 2005,one African young boy in Guangzhou slipped out from his house in the 8th floor and died, because the policemen was knocking on his door to check his paper, and his visa has just expired for some days........

That is awful! thou he shouldnt have to do that just because his visa was expired. Might be there is a foul play happened on him? am guess ???shallow reasons right?

This issue would remind not only for Africans but also to all foreigners in abroad to take of the responsibility with his/her papers

The numerous cases of Africans being illegal here in China has forced many frustrated. The main cause is not money but negligence.MAny of my friends repartriated back to Africa were financially fit to process their visas but due to their irresponsibility or responsibility they overstayed their visas. This is a piece of advice to many Africans who are here in China but take visa issue for granted.

I think spending 2000rmb to extend your visa is far much better than spending 3 months in jail and later be repartriated.Look at this Nigerian guy loosing his dear life from this visa issue. It's a pity indeed.May his soul rest in peace. :-[

Sometimes for a businessman the time and red tape to go through for a VISA can cause the delay which he cannot afford. I read many Chinese engineers who went to Africa for manitenance their telecommunication project also breached the condition of stay, many of them were put in African jail, but they talk about their experience in jail like it was part of life have to be accepted. ;D

I totally agree.  Money is not always the issue.  I know some Africans here who constantly "forget" to get their visas processed.

Some people also like to get themselves into financial difficulties - they don't want to prioritize on the more important things (such as their visa), they'd rather spend their cash clubbing &/or whatever.

MOre than sad - tragic!

BUt do we know the true dimension of this case? IT's been said he was a Nigerian; it's not known what he was doing here.

I happen to have been buddies with several Nigerians. Although they broke no laws I know they have not always lived up to the expectations of their host society. One entertained hookers in his apartment while claiming he was "teaching them English". His employer moved him to a different province.

Other Africans I have to say are somewhat less than stellar role models include those that approached me outside the Little Hill Bar in Guangzhou, saying they were looking for "an Australian" named "Johnny". Or was it "Jimmy"? DOesn't matter - they wanted in fact my money. How? "Can you help us release our suitcase which is in the custody of a Chinese person?"
Said suitcase supposedly contained a hoard of U.S. yuan banknotes. "We will give you 30% of the money if you help us", they said; of course, I was supposed to advance the fee to the custodian...
Of course, I never took that seriously; however, such ploys have been tried and tested uncounted times over the past couple of years. How many locals and other laowais have fallen victim to this type of crime?
It resembles the infamous Nigerian 419 scam!
