This is an interesting thread: http://www.thebeijinger.com/forum/2008/04/12/I-Didnt-Like-Shanghai

----------

The only problem I have with Shanghai is the lack of central heating, which is horrible in the dorms because we're not allowed to have our own heaters (I was wearing gloves just a minute ago). Grin But I do understand the necessity, as I almost burned the dorm down last year when I broke the rules and decided to have my own small heater, LOL.

I have a hard time believing that Shanghai is dirtier than Beijing, I spent only about 15 hours in Beijing and that short period of time was probably the worst I had ever spent in my years living in China.  That said, I even saw kids smoking (probably about 8 years old or so) at the railway station there.  Also, many 'CSC drop-outs' from my country are students who were studying at Beijing. Grin

I heard that Beijing's nightlife is a whole lot better than Shanghai's, but I'll have to experience that one for myself.

Shanghai's taller and more robust that BJ, people are more stylish and the mood is trendier.

But i gotta tell u though, they have a bar culture out in BJ that kicks Shanghai's butt. Those restaurent's and pubs in the hutong areas are a super cool cultural icon made hip. A night out in those areas is like a treasure hunt, u keep discovering all kinds of nice spots in that organized confusion. I had a swell time out there.

But on the whole i still prefer Shanghai, the fast pace does it for me,.. i guess being from a small city i also just cant get enough of the city's crazy infrastructure! Grin

This is coming from someone who has lived in both cities for a decent amount of time. Both cities are great and each has its advantages and disadvantages. Neither one is clearly better than the other....that's just a matter of opinion. Either city is great for me just as long as I'm able to get what I came for.

Alright man...good to give credit where its due! At the same time I must admit that there's a much stronger sense of community here among Beijing's expat community than Shanghai's!
