Can I go out with my baby without being an inconvenience to everyone around me? Can I go grocery shopping with my baby also? I'm just curious to know how easy it wld be to get around town.

Come to think of it, I don't see a lot of babies around... Don't worry about inconveniencing the Chinese.  They're practically immune to that.

..do not panic even if u dont know any mandarin..everywhere u go in china there is always one or two   chinese pipo willing to offer you help..things like hse rent  all depend on someones budget from as little as 500rmb u can get a hse ....almost all chinese though are the worst racists on earth towards blacks so come prepared...but their racism comes from ignorance not prejudice....the food is good when u arrive but terrible if u stay...good thing is that the same applies to pipo in reverse

That's great ninja assasin. Yea, I have read so many news on how chinese view the blacks, am so ready psychologically, but also am those kind of ppl who no send person...haha...so i cld really care less abt it, but being prepared is def. a good thing.
Where can I find accmodation for 500 RMB/month, I'm looking for a decent place to stay in. Close to West Yanan Road, because my classes will be held on Yanan Rd. Campus. Do you know someone who is into real estate and could help me find a place prior to my arrival. Also, airport pickup anyone (would compensate for time). I just need someone to take me around to the apartments so that I can pick which one is best for me. Pls if u have some free time. Help out a sista (time is money, so am willing to compensate); and better still if you have a place for me prior to my arrival.....
Pls email me at esbetty2003@yahoo.com, and let's discuss the details. Thanks a lot!

If you're looking for a decent apartment I would suggest not going for a 500 rmb/month apartment, but that's just my opinion.  A friend of mine was able to find a really nice one-bedroom apartment for about 1800 rmb but it was far away from the CBD.  Donghua is 15 mins to the CBD by bus, so a "decent" apartment would probably cost you 2000 to 3000+.

I would suggest living in the university's hotel for a few days or a week while you go apartment hunting, many students do that.  It might be an opportunity to meet other students (or classmates even) who are also trying to look for an apartment.  It'll might also give you chance to familiarize yourself with the vicinity.

If that's what you're planning to do, there's a shuttle bus (20 rmb per person) that'll take you from the airport to the university gate (well, opposite of it anyway) and opposite of the university's hotel.  Don't take a taxi, because they tend to cheat the newbies and next thing you know, you're paying 300RMB just to get downtown.  But the decision is yours...

I think I've got several English-speaking agents' numbers lying around somewhere, they might be able to find several available apartments for you to look at...but I've never really used them so I can't guarantee anything good.  Lemme know if you're willing to try them out though.

Don't know if I'll be in Shanghai on Feb so that's pretty much all I can say for now.

Canada has a pretty good sized Chinese population so you should be able to do some networking before you leave.  Maybe join some clubs and organizations.  It's gonna be especially tough bringing a baby with you, but I think that the fact that you are seriously considering doing this shows that you're a tough person.

Y’all are great peeps. Thanks so much for your feedback Sabrina.
What’s CBD?

Sorry about that, I mean Central Business District.

Also, when you said airport to the university, are u referring to Pudont airport? Pls confirm so that I can buy my ticket to arrive in that location.

Yes, Pudong.  If you're taking the shuttle bus, you should be taking bus #3.

Will PM you later today.
