L.I.F.E : Living In Fear of Extinction

« on: November 29, 2005, 11:10:09 PM »

I generally have no objection to the principals of Christmas, and the stories behind it. However significant aspects of it should not be applied to the southern hemisphere, especially the mother continent, Africa. I am specifically refering to that overfed fictional character Father Christmas, or Santa Claus as some call him.

The idea of Santa Claus should be abandoned from christmas in Africa, for the plain reason that it disregards not only Africans, but everyone in the southern hemisphere. The concept of Santa revolves around the "white christmas", here i am refering to snow and not race, there is no snow in Africa at christmas time!!!

Santa's mode of transport consists of reindeers, animals very foreign to the Africa. Even his sledge can only find mobility on ice, not the breathtaking savannas of Africa.

Santa's assistants are Elfs, creatures of European mythology, i've never heard of an African elf.

I also seriously doubt Santa Claus has ever been to Africa,  in those boots, heavy jacket and pants, hell no!! He wouldn't last  five minutes without stripping his clothes of, imagine a fat naked white man coming down your chimney at the wee hours of the morning, my goodness!!

Furthermore, the image that comes to mind when one thinks of a christmas tree is of a tree species i have never before seen in Africa. This is because the 'set standard' (for want of a better expression) of a christmas tree is the pine tree.  Pine trees don't grow in Africa, they are an evergreen tree species found in the northern hemisphere!

What i am basically trying to say here is that whoever developed the concept of Santa and this manner of celebration, had absolutely no consideration for people of the southern hemisphere. The concept is overtly a western thing, embracing Santa is tantamount to beating the hell of out your own pride.

Also Santa Claus, as an elderly jolly looking white man and a bringer of smiles to children around the world, solidifies the fallacy that the white man is the giver of all good things.

Inspite of this, the globalising of the Santa Claus concept continues to spread, this is because Santa now has major sponsors who have their eyes set on the financial domination of the world. Santa Claus's costume bears the colours of a certain soft drink/soda that has become recognisable almost any where on earth!!
