I'm African but was born and bred in London. I'm currently studying international economic development, of which I'm very very passionate about.
I believe the only way Africa can benefit from the Africa-China trade is if they is a lot of Africans with businesses in China.
This is how (history shows) other ethnics have progressed i.e. Jews in America formed their own businesses, even though they were discriminated against, hence today Jews are one of the/if not the richest ethnic group.

Back to my question, is there a lot of African/Black owned businesses in China?

Well I don't think it would be possible to find this information as even embassies do not have such statistics. On the other hand it will depend of your definition of an African/Black owned business, are you talking only about legal structures or anyone here claiming to have a business or be a businessman? And what about those businesses where Blacks are only a shareholder or have partnered up with a Chinese, does this count?

As for influencing the Africa-China trade by having a big number of African businesses in China, it is quite idealistic but very unrealistic. The business environment and the sheer size and number of Chinese companies doesn't favor the emergence of foreign players, and only multinationals (which most come from the West) can make the most of the opportunities here.

This is how (history shows) other ethnics have progressed i.e. Jews in America formed their own businesses, even though they were discriminated against, hence today Jews are one of the/if not the richest ethnic group.

Forming businesses is key to doing well for a group in the country they immigrate to.  It has nothing to do with trade relations with the country they immigrate from.

Cubans in Miami have done pretty well, in spite of a decades long anti-Cuba trade embargo.
Jews in Europe did well, long before a Jewish homeland was created-- The Jews in Antwerp had made mucho dinero trading in African diamonds (the African miners, not so much).  Koreans in the USA have done well and it isn't due to imports of Korean alcohol for sale in liquor stores.

Do you think a Jew who was born in England and moved to Argentina is more interested in trade with the Levant than in trade with Europe?  (I think he's more interested in trade with wherever yields the most profits).

IMHO the way for Africa to benefit from the trade with China is to demand that production facilities for whatever is being made from the raw materials currently being stripped from Africa, be located in Africa even if ownership is Chinese.

Exporting raw materials is a great way to make a few people rich.  Exporting finished goods is a proven way to make a nation rich.

The few businesses I know owned by Africans are mostly or used to be in Gouangzhou.
It baffles me how freely Chinese parade in and out of my country with or without visas with the government saying just nothing while one has to lie flat here to get a visa extended.  :o

It's easy to begin a business in GZ. Im not talking about small trades which you get goods there to export to UK. You can build a fatory ( with a small capital ) in Dongguan, or other places in Guangdong to be producer. However, you have to make sure you have enough clientele in ur countries and some other countries, including investment market, free market, and captain market ..etc..

Most of my Black friends in GZ came from Southern Africa.
