LOL I was watching an Asian-American video on Youtube where this ABChinese guy asks advice from an African "Witch Doctor". :D

I'd really like to know more about what the Chinese would do if an African witch doctor were to "set up shop" here in China e.g. Shanghai? :D

What are your personal opinions re: African Witch doctors, and what's the typical Chinese perception?

Thanks. ;)

Some Chinese especially those in rural places might believe in the "witch doctors" to a certain extend, but the practice is banned in China. If they got attention from the government of police especially when it led to serious consequences, they could be in deep trouble or sent to prison.

Agree with that. China is probably the only country on earth where bishops of the Catholic church are nominated by the government and not by the Vatican. There is a strong scrutiny of anything that is related to religion or spirituality...

1. Do you guys see those chinese men and women who often sit at roadsides with special chinese characters written all around them? It is said that they can predict one's future and read your problems. Some chinese actually consult with them. Is that very different from our African seers?

2. As the New Year celebration came around did you guys notice those "monks" moving around and hanging at strategic places, targeting mostly foreigners with some kind of talisman (gold coated flat thing in a little red packet) claiming it will bring success, luck and wealth? In my own case they told me it was free and immediately I accepted it, they asked me to make a free donation and sign my name in a receipt booklet. When I said I didn't have even a cent on me, the took it back. My friend (chinese) had got it for free the previous day, that's why I wanted to give it a try. Now, how is that different from our African talisman?

3. Haven't you guys seen those statues reperesenting the God of wealth in chinese restaurants and shops with red candles around them? They are placed there as an attraction of wealth and they perform rites regularly around them. Is that so different from the spiritual bowls African witch doctors provide for those who believe in them to worship?

What I am trying to illustrate is that we all do the same thing. Our beliefs are all connected. We are all superstitious. Languages have simply given different words to all these things and then Man as selfish and discriminatory as He is, tries to project the beliefs of the other societies as BAD and His as GOOD.

I think if the locale police here arrest an African witch doctor, it is questionable even if it violates the chinese law. The "Chinese Magic" stores (market) in Beijing is located not very far from the Tian an men square (the heart of China). I have been to those stores. Brand it 'modern magic' if you want and brand the others 'witch doctors' it's all about believing in something that's beyond ordinary human understanding.

You guys are taking this topic too seriously. :D

I asked that question because I was going to write an article (leaning towards perverted humour) about what Africans could achieve by taking advantage of the Asian's inherent superstitious nature.

I'm pretty sure you guys can figure out what my article would have been about. ;D
