L.I.F.E : Living In Fear of Extinction

« on: November 20, 2007, 04:22:29 PM »

I could be over reacting, but in the past 6 or so months i've been hearing reports of foreigners getting beatin up in Shanghai clubs by Chinese dudes.

Actually i personally know one or two guys who've been victim to such attacks. It aint even about colour. It's about being foreign. Why all of a sudden is this stuff happening? Is there an increase in xenophobia among Chinese dudes. Is it getting dangerous to go out?

Share your story if you have one.

I aint never stepping out to a club without my boys. Seems also them Chinese dudes don't believe in a fair fight, it's always a bunch of em ganging up on one guy.

I just feel that people are more and more angry (because of inequalities of society and unequal distribution of wealth?), and the growing antipathy against foreigners may be just a way to vent out their frustration since everything else is much controlled.

Yeah I think it's all based on the 'wrong' impression that foreigners are better treated, that foreigners get more favours and advantages here than the locals.
In my own experience in Beijing I met a chinese guy and his girlfriend. We talked business for a while and had a drink together. His girlfriend asked for my business card and that almost led to a fight. They broke up two days later, and she still emails me till today.
Another common one I have witnessed many times is this one. Position yourself on the street waiting for a cab with a Chinese and see who the cab driver will stop by, go out looking for an apartment to rent with a chinese and see how you are treated as opposed to the your chinese friend. So, although foriegners get these advantages because of their vulnerability to be duped later, somehow the chinese dudes have a point eventhough their reaction is not the right one. And to be frank, I did that more than once, years ago when I was still in the university back in Africa. We would team up against White guys gaining all the fame in a nightclub or at a party. We used to feel very insecured seeing the way our faculty chicks looked at them.
It's a thing very closely related to inferiority complex.
