Obinna

Here are some highlights:

Title: African Prince Tailor

Running a store: sewing is fun
Embarrassment: black face scared away customer
Goal: find a beautiful Chinese wife

The African clothes store locates in the west of Dong Si Shi Tiao, among many side-by-side of clothes stores. The co-owner is a prince, a son of Nigerian chief. He rather lives in a low profile worry free life instead of a privileged life as a prince. His Chinese name is 王子 (Prince).

Profile:
Name: Obinna
Chinese name: 王子 (Prince)
Age:30 years old
Nationality:Nigeria
Profession: African prince, Beijing tailor
Length of stay in China: 2 years

Prince is the 4th child in his family of 5 boys and 5 girls. After getting his B.S. degree in mechanical engineering, he worked as a mechanical engineer with decent salary, but he did not like it -- headache to him. He learned sewing since he went to elementary school and loved it. He was better tailor than most ladies.

Two years ago, he came to China representing an African company. A year later he found a lady partner and started the very first African clothes store in Beijing. He designed and sewed all his clothes.

Before having his own store, he used to sell his clothes to diplomats in Beijing by visiting Embassies.

Some people approached him to practice their English, he made them friends first and customers later. He learned Chinese through his customers and spoke Chinese mixed with English.

Sewing might be time consuming, but it is fun, relaxing for Prince. Sewing jobs in China are mostly done by women, but in Africa men often take the job and do better than women.

He was good at dealing bargain customers by convincing them with his genuine hand-made African products with quality materials.

Some chicken customers ran away when they saw Prince, a black guy. He felt hurt sometimes, but more often people believed his products were genuine African products from Africa because of his black face.

Prince lived with the family of his business partner and felt like his own home. He fell in love with China and decided to settle here, and find a Chinese wife. Now he has a Chinese girl friend.

He missed his home town, but because of the busy business, Prince has not had chance to go back to Nigeria yet.

Prince is such a good boy of his father -- he does not smoke and does not drink, he makes many friends and remains honest, sincere, humble, modest, not greedy for money. His Chinese friends all liked friendly Prince and often invited him for dinner even if he sometimes was too busy to accept the invitations. The time he spent with his Chinese friends on Chinese New Year was truly memorable, having dumplings/pot stickers, watching firework...

Prince loved the freedom of life in Beijing and felt his root there already. When he feels accomplish enough, he will marry his beautiful Chinese lady.
