Probably somewhere between beginner & intermediate.  I'm better at reading & writing [Mandarin] than I am with speaking.  That's always how it is with me & languages. :-\

Yeah...but I really lack motivation at this point.  I'm not really interested in learning the language anymore. :-\

You will have the motive to learn a language only if it is useful to you. If you are not interested in the Chinese culture or the Chinese language has no bearing in your career planing, it will be hard to learn something like the Chinese language which you think is useless for you. That kind of painful feelings  happen to many Chinese students when they are required to learn English. ::)

Nah, I've just always been this way with languages.  Not my kind of thing.  Anyways, forget me - answer the question! :P

I am a beginner. I find speaking it easier than writing it. However, we are studying both the pinyin and the simplified character way of writing. It has occurred to me that learning to write the chinese character is easier than learning to write pinyin. I remember how to spell the words but the various accent marks are difficult to remember (especially when you're having a test). But I'm happy that Chinese people actually understand me. :)

I am a beginner, I only know my numbers and the street I lived on.  I couldn't even begin to write anything other than my chinese name.  Before I left China, I could follow a conversation a little bit. I really should have taken classes because I would have been much better.  My pronounciation sucked!

The reason why I'm reluctant to express myself in either Mandarin or French: grammatical errors can be quite embarrassing. :-[

Hmm...I thought Chinese grammar was very simple. The linguists in the West used to say Chinese has no grammar. But I would agree French grammar is too complicated.

I don't even know why French is necessary in my country...they just force us to learn it for the sake of tradition I think.
